The Most Overlooked Edge in Investing

When a CEO buys $2 million of their own company's stock, they know something. They've seen the internal projections, the pipeline, the upcoming product launches. They're putting their own money on the line based on information you don't have.

When a U.S. Senator sells a stock two weeks before negative news drops, that's a signal too - one that most individual investors never see until it's too late.

Insider and Congressional trading data is publicly available. The SEC requires it. The STOCK Act requires it. But the data is buried in government databases, filed in formats designed for compliance rather than readability, and released with enough delay that by the time you find it through normal channels, the information advantage has evaporated.

That's the problem Barebone AI solves.

Real-Time SEC Form 4 Tracking

Every time a company insider - CEO, CFO, board member, VP, or 10% owner - buys or sells shares, they must file a Form 4 with the SEC within two business days. These filings are public record.

Barebone AI monitors these filings continuously and surfaces them in your Dashboard. For each trade, you see:

  • Who traded: Name, title, and relationship to the company
  • What they did: Purchase, sale, option exercise, or gift
  • How much: Number of shares and dollar value
  • When: Transaction date and filing date
  • The stock: Ticker, current price, and recent price action

You can search by ticker to see all insider activity for a specific company, or browse the feed chronologically to spot patterns across the market.

Congressional Stock Trade Tracking

Under the STOCK Act of 2012, members of the U.S. Congress must disclose stock trades within 45 days. Barebone AI tracks these disclosures and presents them in a searchable, filterable format.

For each Congressional trade, you see:

  • Politician name and party affiliation
  • Trade type: Purchase or sale
  • Ticker and company name
  • Date of the trade
  • Estimated value range (Congress reports in ranges, not exact amounts)
  • Filing date - how long after the trade the disclosure was made

You can search by politician to track specific legislators, or search by ticker to see which politicians are trading a specific stock.

Why This Data Matters

Academic research has consistently shown that insider purchases - particularly cluster buys where multiple insiders purchase within a short window - outperform the market. A 2024 study in the Journal of Financial Economics found that stocks with significant insider buying outperformed by an average of 4.7% over the following 12 months.

Congressional trading is even more controversial. Multiple analyses have shown that Congressional portfolios outperform the S&P 500, sparking ongoing debate about whether legislators trade on privileged information gained through their oversight roles.

Whether or not you believe politicians trade on material non-public information, the data provides a window into what highly connected, well-informed individuals are doing with their money. That's valuable signal regardless of the mechanism.

How Barebone AI Adds Intelligence

Raw filing data is noise. Thousands of Form 4s are filed every week, most of them routine - automatic option exercises, planned 10b5-1 sales, small gifts. The signal-to-noise ratio is low.

Barebone AI addresses this by:

  1. Highlighting unusual activity - Large discretionary purchases stand out from routine transactions
  2. Contextualizing with price data - You see insider trades alongside the stock's recent performance, so you can evaluate whether insiders are buying weakness or selling strength
  3. Cross-referencing with AI research - One tap from any insider trade takes you into a full AI analysis session where you can ask "Why is the CEO buying?" and get a comprehensive fundamental and technical analysis
  4. Aggregating across sources - Insider trades, Congressional trades, and institutional activity are all available in the same platform, so you can see the full picture of smart money movement

The Practical Workflow

Here's how experienced Barebone users integrate insider trading data into their research:

Step 1: Check the Dashboard's Insider Trades section daily. Look for cluster buying - multiple insiders at the same company purchasing within the same week.

Step 2: When you spot interesting activity, tap the ticker to open the Stock Page. Review the company's fundamentals, recent news, and technical levels.

Step 3: Use the "Is This a Great Company" Skill for a comprehensive fundamental analysis. Cross-reference the insider buying with the company's growth trajectory, financial health, and valuation.

Step 4: Use the "When to Buy and Sell" Skill to identify optimal entry points if you decide to act on the signal.

Step 5: Monitor Congressional trades for sector-level intelligence. If multiple legislators are buying defense stocks before a budget vote, that's a macro signal worth investigating.

What Other Platforms Offer

Bloomberg Terminal provides insider trading data, but at $25,000/year and only on desktop. Most retail brokerages show basic insider transaction tables without context or AI analysis.

Several standalone apps track Congressional trades, but they don't integrate with real-time market data, technical analysis, or portfolio management.

Barebone AI is the only mobile platform that combines real-time insider trades, Congressional trade tracking, AI-powered analysis, and a full investment research suite - all for under $20/month.

Getting Started

Open Barebone AI, navigate to the Dashboard tab, and scroll to Insider Trades or Congress Trades. Both sections are searchable and updated in real-time as new filings are processed. From any trade, tap through to the stock's full profile or launch an AI research session to dive deeper.

The smart money is always moving. Now you can see exactly where it's going.
